I just couldn't stand the writing itself. Who was it? that said, she never met an adverb she didn't like? Just dreadful writing. But I found them easier to digest by listening to on CD. I find that the lead girl (her name escapes me right now) is very annoying. Anne Rice's series – the first two were great. I couldn't finish the third and never even bothered with the next one. Check out Poppy Z. Brite's Lost Souls – vamps as mutant humans, but it's a very human story.
